Sex-specific, soccer-specific training has long been a source of contention among soccer players and fans alike. I have been training athletes of all kinds for the last 3 decades and the benefits in favor of such training are innumerable! The evidence is clear, soccer-specific strength and fitness training delivers and delivers in a big way.

Soccer Summer Conditioning: Hit the Weights!
Soccer Players Require Sex-Specific, Sport-Specific Weight-training for Year 'Round Success!
Whether your soccer season runs year-round or is broken up into seasons (i.e., fall, winter, winter/indoor, spring, etc.) with periodic breaks in-between, weight training should be a regular and important part of your training regimen.
Female soccer players, in particular, need to focus on building muscle strength, particularly leg strength. ACL injuries can be avoided...if you training regularly and properly.
Male soccer players must focus on upper and lower body strength, equally. The size and speed of male soccer players has changed markedly over the past 2 decades. Significantly, weight-training (and cross-training) has played, and will continue to play, a big part in changing the shape and speed of the game.
Additionally, both male and female players need to combine aerobic and anaerobic exercise, constantly pushing the boundary between the two.
Whether you call it cross-training, cross-fitness training, circuit training, or all of the above, it is important to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, pushing the aerobic/anaerobic boundary. In doing so, you will increase your speed, strength, power, and quickness.
Warning: "Rome wasn't built in a day!" In other words, don't do too much too soon! If you do, you may do yourself more damage than good! Contact a fitness professional for advice.
Sadly, while more coaches are aware of the benefits of weight-training, the vast majority of community, club, middle and high school soccer coaches are still not up-to-speed when it comes to the latest in sport-specific, and especially sex-specific training.
